The Stianti family, owners of Castello di Volpaia, have painstakingly restored much of the village and converted it to their winery while preserving all the architectural details and appearances that takes one back to a simpler way of life.

Balifico 2005 - IGT Toscana
The 2005 Balifico is an opaque ruby blend of 2/3 Sangiovese, 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French oak barriques for 18 months. It exhibits effusive scents of smoky
oak, cassis and earth and a layered palate of sweet, concentrated fruit. Finishes with gripping, sweet tannins."

1997 Volpaia, Balifico: Medium-dark ruby/purple, with good tint to the tears. Spicy nose of blackberries and cherries -- later (ca. 2hrs. in and open bottle) added a rosey floral element. Moderately full-bodied, well-balanced flavors of focused black cherry, black currant, and a very mild peppery, spicy finish with relatively firm tannins. Still evolving, not at its peak yet, but certainly enjoyable now. More than held its own with a Black Angus Tenderloin steak (Baci Trattoria in SLC). WS gave this wine a 94, which to me means just a step off classic quality. It did not seem quite that close to a classic super Tuscan to me. My score: 92. Will wait a year for another taste of this vintage.

Balifico Magnifico
Have you ever gone to a restaurant and wondered how you would find that knockout wine you just had with dinner but had never heard of? You go to your local wine shop, and they don’t even have the label, much less, the wine you’re looking for. Well, during our gallivanting through the Newport Mansions Wine and Food Festival (ok, not quite a restaurant) Gary was invited into the booth of the Wilson Daniels wine distributors, where he was introduced to a number of wonderful, unknown (to him) wines. When we wrote our
review of the Festival, we discussed the Coltasalla from Fattoria Castello di Volpaia (Sangioveto and Mammolo grapes) and raved about the quality and non-stop finish on this outstanding Tuscan red.

Castello di Volpaia Balifico Toscana IGT 2005
One-third Cabernet Sauvignon, two thirds Sangiovese di Volpaia, a clone from the property. This offers up the classic scents of these Sangiovese/Cab blends yet even at this relatively high percentage of Cabernet it does not dominate the nose. There are balanced notes of leathery fruit and cool, crisp Cabernet notes with a gentle edge of tomato leaf. Gaining a bit more depth with air the lightly smoky, spicy chili notes of Cabernet become more assertive yet in the mouth the feel is that of the austere and sapid Sangiovese but with the deep black currant fruit of Cabernet augmenting the cherry tones read more...of the Sangiovese well. This retains juicy acids and has good length in a rounder and fruitier style than the other wines. Definitely a crowd-pleaser and while perhaps as complex as the other Castello di Volpaia wines this is a bit on the smooth and polished side.

Le Chianti coeur del la Toscane viticole
Castello di Volpaia – Le village del Volpaia est presque entiérement dédié au domaine viticole. Deux des trois églises sont devenues lieu de stockage ou de conference. Giovannella, fille d’un imprimeur de Florence qui avait acquis le domaine, n a fait un haut lieu du turisme agricole italien. Avec ses enfants, Federica, Carlo et Nicolo, elle gére le domaine, le restaurant,l’école de cuisine, la boutique, les locations.

"The 2004 Balifico presents herbs, bell pepper, spiced black pepper, cassis and blackberries, with a lovely, expressive personality and finessed tannins on the finish. Although it is structured and full-bodied, owing to the relatively high attitude it remains somewhat linear in style. It will benefit from another year or two in bottle, after which it should drink well to age 15. Anticipated maturity:
2009-2022."

"The 2003 Balifico opens with a sweet, open nose followed by cinnamon, spice cake andripe black cherries, showing outstanding length on the palate. It is richer, riper and more full-bodied than the 2004, but its rougher tannins (typical of 2003) convey an impression of less elegance. Still, it is a very pretty wine. Anticipated maturity:
