2006 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva Coltasala; Good full ruby with a pale rim. Perfumed aromas of ripe red cherry and raspberry are lifted by aromatic notes of sandalwood, bay leaf and cinnamon. Enters rich, dense and creamy, but with very good clarity to the ripe red cherry and red berry flavors complicated by exotic spices and vanillin oak. Finishes very long and smooth, with a lovely creamy sweetness. Though I long for the great Coltassalas of 1981 or 1985, two truly monumental wines, this is the best young vintage for this wine in quite some time

Volpaia è un valido esempio di agricoltura moderna perfettamente integrata in un suggestivo e intatto borgo medievale. Gli abitanti del borgo lavorano nell'azienda e le antiche case e le chiese sconsacrate, recuperate, sono utilizzate con ocolatezza, anzi il vino scorre come linfa vitale tra una cantina e l'altra in un "vinodotto" sotterraneo. La regia di questa struttura di altri tempi è di Giovannella Stianti e del marito Carlo Mascheroni.

A sexy and even complex nose, laced with ripe candied cherry, black pepper, and new leather is sure to please and the attack on the palate does not displease. Made in the new-school, here we see balance, a healthy yet not overdone extraction of fruit, and a finish that is long, balanced, and persistent. The wine is clearly crafted for the world stage and I'm confident it will find an encore audience more times than not. Well done.

An unfinished nose, while still appealing, leads to an uber dense chew-toy that shows serious promise but now needs a braised wildebeest to keep it in check. A monster of a wine but the chewy tannins are matched backstage by the fruit that has yet to unearth itself. In time.
Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva 86/100
An ample and bright nose, complete with the dried flowers, raw beef, and chocolate, leads to a complete wine in the mouth. The fruit, where red berry and blueberries lead the way, is well integrated into the chewy tannins that hover on the palate from start to finish.

Volpaia è un posto magico. Per la bellezza del borgo, ovvio, ma soprattutto perché oggi come ieri,tutto parla di vino ed è coinvolto nella sua produzione: dalle viuzze alle chiese sconsacrate,dagli abitanti del posto all'incredibile "vinodotto" sotterraneo. Eccola la grande opera della famiglia Mascheroni Stianti, capace di una simile impresa in una zona fascinosa e un po' al limite per il Chianti Classico, con vigne che toccano i 500 metri di altitudine. i vini sono impeccabili, di un livello assoluto, figli di tecniche moderne e del loro incantevole contesto.
Tre etichette su tutte. Il Puro'06, sangiovese in purezza è un grande vinooltre a essere un importante progetto di charity i cui proventi andranno interamente a finanziare Save the Children. tre Bicchieri. Splendido il balifico'06, sangioveto e cabernet di straordinaria ampiezza aromatica, carnoso al palato ma anche ricco di contrasti, note speziate e lievi cenni erbacei, capace d'incrociare a meraviglia dolcezza e acidità. Sulla stesso livello il Chianti classico Riserva'06, vino autentico e di grande sapore. Niente male l'altra Riserva'06, il Coltassala, più maturo e rotondo.

Dungeons and Trebbianos
F ifty-two people, four churches, no priests. And the niftiest winery you've ever seen. Welcome to Volpaia. Nifty? OK, medieval nifty, as in a winery that's cleverly built into, around, among, and through a tiny Tuscan hill town (a hamlet, really) that dates from the 11th century. It's spitting distance to Radda in Chianti, 25 miles from Siena and 35 from Florence, and its historic purpose was to fend off attacks from the Florentines. Its purpose today is to demonstrate how much better it is than where you live.
Castello di Volpaia harvests Sangiovese, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay (this is not your grandfather's Chianti) from vineyards surrounding Volpaia, vinifies them in buildings hundreds of years old around the Piazza 23 Novembre, and ages them in labyrinthine cellars underneath a couple of those priestless churches - which is also the Lord's work. For you authenticity fans, you can finally climb up the steep stairs to a vin santaia, an attic where Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes hang on long chains from the rafters, like hams, drying out for months at a time before being turned into the most sacred sweet wine, vin santo.
And then you can go make lunch. The other nifty part about the winery (and olive oil producer) is that it's also a cooking school run by owner Giovannella ("call me Jo" ) Stianti Mascheroni. It's a very small cooking school, and yes, you can sign on for just one meal. I didn't enroll for class, but I did stay to eat Jo's Pasta Norma and her veal braised in milk and carrots. And drank her bright Chianti Classico, a food-affectionate, acid-rich sweetheart. For dessert, I nominated her for sainthood.

"WITH the World Gourmet Summit (WGS) 2009 commencing in less than two weeks, it may be useful to devote this week's column to providing relevant information on forthcoming wine events.
Last December, I wrote about Italy's Chianti Classico and briefly touched on the role of the Consorzio Chianti Classico - 'The Consorzio Vino Chianti (trademark Gallo Nero - Black Rooster) was established in 1924 to maintain standards and protect the name.'
The Consorzio Chianti Classico will be officially participating in WGS 2009.

Extroverted but contained nose of whole plum, hickory, and dried cherries enveloped the nose but the palate is unmercifully attacked by velvety tannins and mature but not under ripe red fruit that is relentless in its pursuit of the sweet spot of your palate. This is serious chianti classico; as good as it gets, and should serve as an example of what the region is capable of producing with its own local varietals. A perfect nervous system will insure that it will improve thru 2014. Outstanding wine and sublime example of sangiovese! Drink thru 2015. read more

Produced from 95% Sangiovese and 5% mammolo. In contrast to the open and giving 2004 CCR this bottle opens very slowly with intriguing notes of vanilla tinged jammy blackberry fruit that is framed with gentle toast notes and a very fine mineral vein that grows in intensity. After about an hour this really blossoms with fine perfumed scents of violets, hot beach sand, hot iron, subtle cinnamon and a light top note of fine cigar smoke. In the mouth this will appeal to those who prefer balance and precision over power and weight. Opening with great cut, this it tight and almost tough with emerging notes read more...of oyster shell and very small red currant fruit but the balance and definition are wonderful and the sapidity and austerity of the wine keep one coming back again and again. With time the wine fills out a touch and gains a sneaky length as the tight core of fruit turns towards blackberry and ends with a subtle mint tinged hard candy note.

Coltassala Chianti Classico Riserva 2004
The vines at Coltassala-all sangiovese and mammolo-are planted at both southeast and southwest exposures around a hillside that rises to nearly 1,700 feet. Volpaia has made Coltassala since 1980, and this year's bottling shows the degree to which sangiovese from the scrubland hills between Florence and Siena can achieve rustic nobility. The wine feels shy when first poured, gradually revealing scents of dried roses and rosemary along with dark, plummy fruit. As time passes, it becomes more floral, the strong tannins providing firm structure and savory length. Completely satisfying, cellar this for five to eight years or decant it for grilled ribeye.

Coltassala Chianti Classico Riserva 2001
Giovannella Stianti e il marito Carlo Mascheroni, dopo aver conquistato per la prima volta i Tre bicchieri lo scorso anno con il Balifico, si sono ripetuti quest'anno, con una splendida versione della Riserva Coltassala 2001. Il lavoro impostato insieme all'enologo consulente Riccardo Cotarella ha dato buoni frutti, testimoniati da un ottimo risultato d'insieme. Il vino premiato si presenta di un colre vivissimo, con note olfattive che ricordano il frutto di bosco concentrato, cenni speziati di vaniglia e sentori balsamici. In bocca l'ingresso è invitante con un corpo che si dimostra avvolgente, ben assestato, con una buona distribuzione tannica e una lunga persistenza gustativa.
